UPDATE: I've learned that Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston are testing candidates for The First Avenger: Captain America which Paramount will distribute on July 22, 2011. I’ve scooped their wish list: most but by no means all of the contenders are young hunks who come from both movies and television -- Chace Crawford (CW's Gossip Girl), John Krasinski (NBC's The Office), Scott Porter (NBC's Friday Night Lights), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Michael Cassidy (CW's Privileged), Patrick Flueger (Brothers). They also wanted Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), but he so far hasn’t made a test deal. The studio yesterday tested several candidates from this list. It's not surprising that the roster contains so many little known actors: Marvel after all cast a complete unknown as Thor, Chris Hemsworth. The role is enticing, but Marvel is known for driving hard bargains on its superhero deals. There's a salary scale, but if you're not a known quantity like Crawford or Krasinski, the offer is around $300,000 for the first film. And whoever gets the role will have to sign for another nine options for future films that include sequels, Avengers movies, or anything else Marvel decides. In fact, I’m told reliably that Captain America director Johnston recently reached an impasse with Marvel and briefly walked off the film when Marvel informed him the budget was too high and he’d have to take a pay cut. They found common ground and he returned to the fold, but it reinforces Marvel’s reputation for hard bargaining, something that all the Iron Man 2 participants discovered. For those not in the know, Captain America is Steve Rogers, a military service washout who volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into the superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals. The sickly young man is enhanced to the peak of human potential by an experimental serum: he's known for using his signature vibranium-steel allow shield as a multipurpose weapon.

Thoughts? Obviously, Krasinski is the surprise name out of the bunch... I haven't seen enough of the other actors to have any solid opinion. Still, I'm glad they're not considering 45-year old actors for the role. That should shut up the Mark Valley people.

I was really surprised "The Office's" 'Jim' would be in the casting,
but in terms of look a likes I feel Porter would look more like the capt.
but still...

Wow... That´s new for me...

Sadly, I'm not familiar with any of these. This, then, raises a question. If you've got mainstream stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson (and possibly, though probably not, Ed Norton) mixed in a future Avengers movie with one of these people and the actor playing Thor, does that mean that RDJ and SLJ become the dominant characters in the movie?

I do hate that Marvel's been so cheap since 2008. They achieved greatness by going after the big talents in Hollywood for Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, but with the Thor and Cap movies, it's like they're going for inexpensive, unproven actors for their leading roles instead. I do love Thor's supporting cast though.

Overall, the morale on the Captain America front seems to be a bit low. Does anyone else notice that? Reports from Joe Johnston as well as reviews of his recent movies haven't bred much confidence from the fanboy/girl community lately.

Unfortunately I know nothing of those people and I was defiantly hoping for Captain Awesome to be Captain America.

What are all of your thoughts on the reported offer to Chris Evans?

I'm all for Chris Evans as Cap. Let's not forget he's older now than he was when he was the Human Torch in FF. Put on the mask and give him some time to bulk up a little and he's Cap. What'll be more interesting is how he comes off as Steve Rogers. He's 28 though. That, I think, is the perfect age. Old enough to play Cap, but young enough that Marvel can use him for 9 movies.

He was the best thing about Fantastic Four, in my opinion. On the other hand, I have no fixed idea in my head as to what Captain America is supposed to be like. So I don't know if he's the right or wrong choice for it.

Wow. I randomly come to RandomFansite, randomly pic a RandomForum to read, and come upon the news Chris Evans has been picked to play Captain America. I have to agree with Kevin. I loved Chris as Johnny in FF, thought he and Michael were the best thing about the movies. I hated hearing they were rebooting the series, because I wouldn't have Evans and Chiklis...

However, now seeing this news, I'm a bit enthused. I want to see if he can pull it off.

I hear you about evans and chiklis, greenfan2013... It's how I feel about JK Simmons and Rosemary Harris for the Spidey movies.

JK was almost too good as JJJ, and Rosemary made me really care about Aunt May, like I'm suppose to. I'm really going to miss them too. Sometimes I want to shoot the reboots (even if they are much needed) just because I loved the actors who played the characters well.
